ACTIVITY OF THE WEEK

With the soccer season now in full swing, coaches at all levels are frantically searching for new and latest activities that will assist them in their coaching sessions. The emphasis on FUN, NO LINES & CONTINUED LEARNING EXPERIENCE for players is important.

Hence each week there will be an Activity of the Week for Coaches to try out in their training sessions. The activity suplements the Week Session Plans that are provided. The idea is to add variety to your training sessions so that your players will continue to enjoy their soccer experience and offer coaches to build on their coaching sessions portfolio.

I hope you and your players will enjoy the Activity of the Week.

Regional Technical Director

TOPIC: Small Sided Game - WAR!!!

AGE GROUP: U8 and Over

DURATION: 15 – 20 minutes

ACTIVITY:

The teams line up outside the pitch behind the goals, opposite each other. Assign each player a number. The coach starts the game by tossing the ball on to the pitch and calling a number. The players of that number from each team run into the field of play and try to score through the opposite goal. Once a player scores, award that team one point. Make sure everyone has a go. Ensure both teams stand beside the goals while they wait for the Coach to call out a number/s!

FIELD: 25m x 40m grid.

PROGRESSION:

  • #1: Call out a second number while the first pair are playing. Now you have a 2 v 2 team situation.
  • #2: Call out two or 3 numbers from the start so you could have 2 v 2 or 3 v 3.

 COACHING POINTS:

§         Defending techniques - closing down, positioning between the attacker and the goal and not “diving in”.

§         Attacking techniques – encourage players to dribble pass players; using teammates as support (wall pass or decoy runners).

§         Effective communication.
